Ohio is one of the north western states. Its capital and largest city is Columbus. It is a reasonably populated state, although not one of the largest. As with any state, Ohio knows it share of drug problems. So much so, in fact, that research has been done in the demographics of drug abuse on a more global level. Before looking into that, however, it is interesting to have a baseline comparison by providing the data from Ohio itself. This data has been provided by an Ohio drug rehab center. The greatest drug threat to the state is cocaine, both powdered and crack. Arrests of drug users have shown this is the most prevalent drug. Heroin, however, is also on the rise. 16% of admissions to drug rehab centers are relating to heroin and this constitutes a significant rise from previous years. Meth is also on the increase and it is worrying that increasing numbers of meth labs are also appearing. Meth is a particularly dangerous drug and the police forces across the state are doing all they can to round up these labs. There is also an increase in young people using drugs, particularly club drugs. Drugs like GHB, MDMA (XTC), LSD and Ketamine are on the increase. As in all states, marijuana is readily available and seems to be the drug of choice for many young people.
You may wonder who in the world actually needs treatment for drug and alcohol treatment. It will probably not surprise you too much to know that the exact details vary depending on demographics. An Ohio drug rehab center recently compiled a report about these details and the results are interesting. You must remember that the world is very varied. The Ohio drug rehab center had to look at different religions, different ethnicity types, different creeds and different races. In general, our differences make us stronger and we are all able to coexist. However, the Ohio drug rehab center felt that drug and alcohol rehab had to be focused on individuals, rather than at a single hole. Because there are so many different types of people, there is a need for different types of treatments. Let’s take a look.
Global Drug and Alcohol Programs
Every country in the world is different. The Ohio drug rehab center quickly noticed that approaches to alcoholism and drug addiction vary greatly from one country to the next. There are many countries in the world where being an addict is a criminal offense. In these countries, an addict is simply thrown in jail rather than receiving treatment like the type offered by an Ohio drug rehab center. There are even a number of countries where being a drug addict is an offense punishable by death! In this country, however, we believe that the population should receive care and treatment. In fact, the main focus of any Ohio drug rehab center now is to give a holistic and comprehensive approach to rehabilitating the user. There are many different types of drug treatments available for individuals in this country. This is so that every single person will be able to get the treatment they need. Some of the choices that are available include:
- Outpatient addiction treatment
- Residential treatment
- Addiction treatment specific for women
- Holistic alcohol and drug rehab
- Alcohol and drug rehab specific for men
These are just a few of the options available, but they demonstrate just how much thought has gone into this type of treatment in this country.
Who Needs Addiction Treatment
So what about the demographics of addicts? This was one of the more interesting parts of the research conducted by the drug rehab center. The result, perhaps unsurprisingly, were that anybody, regardless of where they live or who they are, is able to develop a drug addiction. However, different segments of the population have access to different types of treatment. For instance, it is more common to find alcohol treatment centers in New York. Similarly, people in New York have better insurance packages for alcohol treatment. Compare this to people in Iraq, for instance, and they won’t have any treatment options available to them. One very interesting statistic that was uncovered by the Ohio drug rehab center is that people in urban centers in our country have far higher of drug abuse. Other parts of the world where drug abuse is highly prevalent is in parts of Africa, Eastern Europe and Afghanistan. A problem with this is that there are too many places that don’t have sufficient drug rehab or alcohol treatment centers to help all of these people. Often, people who are addicted to drugs pose a nuisance to society, but they are unable to break the cycle of abuse that they have entered, because no support is available to them. Added to this that they are ostracized by their communities and sometimes even at risk of being imprisoned, and you can see how this can become a problem. In some countries, no support is available at all, but access to drugs and alcohol is actually very easy. Here, people quite literally die on the streets due to alcohol or drug abuse, causing further problems for society.
Addiction Treatment in the United States
It was particularly important to look at our own borders as well. The Ohio drug rehab center found some interesting data to show who is most at risk of becoming addicted to substances. These included adolescents and teenagers, women, the poor, senior citizens, people with gang affiliations and college students. The Ohio drug rehab center did add to this that the types of substances used by each of these groups are very different. For instance, senior citizens are far more likely to be addicted to prescription medication. However, an addiction is an addiction and treatment must be provided for this. Luckily, there are numerous rehab centers across the country that offer a range of different types of therapy programs. Professionals here are trained to work with various substances, including drugs, opiates, prescription drugs and alcohol.
