Idaho Drug Rehab And Counseling To Be Expected

Idaho is a reasonably large state in the North West of the country. It is a state with vast expanses of open space, being the 7th least populated state. The capital of Idaho is Boise, which is also the largest city in the state. People from Idaho are called Idahoans. Unfortunately, Idaho is not idyllic. A huge drugs ring was busted in 2008, which was supplying large quantities of crack and cocaine into the state. Cocaine is still the drug of choice for Idahoans, although Mexican black tar and heroin are increasing in popularity. Methamphetamine is quickly becoming the most abused drug in the state, which is a particularly worrying trend. Unsurprisingly, there are more and more Idaho drug rehab centers opening up. Let’s take a look at what is on offer.

Drug Rehabilitation in Idaho

At the heart of drug rehabilitation lies counseling. Any good Idaho drug rehab center will offer their residents intensive counseling during their stay at the rehab center, but also after they have been released back into the community. In fact, checking into a drug rehab center will start with a detox period, but the rest is all about counseling. But what does this involve? What sort of help can you expect and what sort of details will you have to reveal? For many, the thought of counseling is scary at best, even in a supportive environment like an Idaho drug rehab center. During counseling, you will be confronted with your own behavior and your own mistakes and this can be incredibly hard. However, it is necessary to face these facts if you intend to ever get better. As hard as it may be to tell an individual or a group that you have done unspeakable things of which you are not proud, this is incredibly therapeutic and necessary if you want to get better. Let’s take a look at the three main types of counseling you will receive: private or one to one counseling, group counseling and counseling after you have been released.

Group Counseling at an Idaho Drug Rehab Center

So what can you expect from group counseling? Here, you will essentially be placed in a group of people who have similar problems to you. It has been noticed that many people who are addicts think they are alone in the world. They think nobody else can understand their problems because no one else has ever experience them. During group counseling at an Idaho drug rehab center, you will learn that your story is not that unusual at all. Lots of people feel the same way, have behaved the same way and have the same fears and shames as you have. It can be incredibly confrontational to take part in this type of counseling. With a single therapist, you will only receive positive feedback from someone who is trained. With group therapy, you will possibly rub people the wrong way and you can expect fierce criticism of your feelings. Don’t worry, however, since a therapist is at hand during these sessions to ensure that things don’t get out of hand. However, if you are expecting sympathy or someone to tell you everything is fine, you will be in for a big disappointment. You are dealing with people who have lost it all – just like you. They are angry, disappointed and upset and they will vocalize this, some more so than others. However, because people will be at different stages of their recovery, you will be able to learn a lot from those who are further along. You will also learn much about yourself, seeing those who are less far along the program, in whom you can recognize your own behavior.

One to One Counseling at an Idaho Drug Rehab Center

The second very important type of therapy is one to one counseling. This type of therapy is offered by an Idaho drug rehab center to really focus on you. This is often full psychotherapy, where a therapist will delve into your past and your emotions to identify why you feel prey to substance abuse in the first place. Again, this is hugely confrontational. It is believed that drug abuse is triggered by traumatic events in the past, or events you have not been able to deal with appropriately. These events will be scrutinized and analyzed. You will relive every harrowing moment and ever embarrassing incident you have ever experienced. However, one to one counseling will also look at helping you deal with the emotions you are likely to feel now that you are on the road to recovery. It is likely that your feelings of shame will shift, from shame about your appearance and your drug use, to shame about what you have done to others, or shame about wasting your life. This type of counseling will help you deal with that, come to terms with your own failings and give it an appropriate space. Often, one to one counseling will also involve a confrontational reconciliation session with your friends and family. This will not be offered until you are emotionally strong enough to actually deal with this, as it is very hard to see how much you have hurt others.

Counseling After Discharge at an Idaho Drug Rehab Center

Once you have completed your detox and all your group and one to one counseling sessions, you will be prepared to reenter society as a sober individual, ready to face society. This is the ultimate goal of an Idaho drug rehab center. However, facing the big world, full of the usual temptations, is very hard. Most Idaho drug rehab centers understand that the temptations can often be too big for ex users. It is all too easy to give in to that temptation once again. So, counseling is offered after release as well. Here, you can discuss how you are coping and whether there are any areas you need support with. Your therapist may be able to help you with job training or provide you with references for any job interviews.
